D.Grayman

Synopsis (taken from Wikipedia): The plot revolves around Allen Walker, an Exorcist, in the end of the 19th century Europe. Allen is a member of the Black Order, which contains Exorcists, connected with Vatican. The mission of the Black Order is to stop The Millennium Earl, an evil ghoul intending to cleanse the world by destroying all the humans in it in the manner of Noah’s great flood. The Exorcists themselves are special people gifted with compatibility with Innocence, a divine substance created in the ages past to combat the Earl’s minions, the Akuma. It is said that there are exactly 109 units of Innocence scattered around the world. Once an Innocence finds its compatible person, it will evolve to become a weapon to fight the Akumas. As the story goes, Allen Walker is introduced with more Exorcist characters, among them are Yu Kanda, Lenalee Lee and Lavi. Also in the spotlight are Komui Lee, the church’s science department supervisor and older brother of Lenalee Lee, Bookman, a mysterious colleague within the church, and Cross Marian, a General in the Organization and Allen’s master.More villains also appear along the way. There are higher level Akumas, with greater power, skill and wit. Newly appearing as of this article is Noah’s Family, a group humans descended from Noah himself gifted with great power allied with the Earl.

So, I’ve decided to write on this anime series that I’m currently watch (among others like Death Note, Shounen Onmyouji (少年阴阳师), Kekkaishi (结界师)). Because I like it so much! I love the pseudo-late 1800s European setting and the amazing plotline. Although Tincampy reminds me too much of a snitch, but that’s all right, it’s cute. And I think Allen and Kanda are so possible.  I seem to have a penchant for monster-killing animes, like Tactics, and Shounen Onmyouji, Kekkaishi, Demonbane etc. I know this is really quite unlike me, one would think I indulge in pseudo-porn like Love Hina that’s filled with over-zealous boobs of not-so-pubescent teenage whores girls. Or prolly schoolyard drama of semi-innocent high school girl with impossibly short skirts and long legs who profess their undying love to their cute 20-something sensei who appears a tad proper in face of courtship from these part-time pornstars (or something like that). Nah-ah. The only schoolyard drama animes I watched were Gakuen Heaven (shush I *heart* shounen-ai) and Ouran High School Host Club (Pamela Anderson shadows absent in main protagonists). So yeah. I love monster-killing animes, although not extreme long series like Inuyasha or funny stuff like Yi-Gi-Oh (psst. Is it even monster?!) or something.

So, back to this series. I really love the Allen character; he’s just so full of justice and emotional and cute at the same time. And Kanda is his exact opposite - cool, reserved and uncaring. But I like the dialectics between them (although Kanda’s been missing in the recent few episodes #%@$#%^) Lenalee’s all right I suppose, but then again I’ve never been fond of female characters. -shrugs- And Lenalee’s brother, Komui is just so damn funny and entertaining. So ya, I like this anime because it strikes a balance between funny stuff and serious stuff - after a few episodes of hardcore fighting, it gets balanced out with a fun episode. Gee.

Anyway, if you’re interested in the manga version of D.Grayman, scans are here.

勘太郎のいたずら心から時には大喧嘩になることもしばしばだが、

豪華絢爛妖怪退治絵巻、ついに登場!!

Yoki-kyoukotsu-aradama-(insert random consonant+vowel string and unnatural high-pitch voice to sound like you’re speaking Japanese). RIGHT. I have absolutely no idea what those wriggly kanji and hiragana mean.

-SULKS- My semi-comatose brain is simply not able to conduct a websearch for an English summary (more like I’m needing to the bathroom after watching almost 10 episodes straight). In a nutshell, Kantarou is a folklorist who has exorcism abilities. He unsealed an oni-eating tengu (the fansub said ogre-eating goblin, which makes him sound so ugly) whom he named Haruka. And together with Haruka, and a bunch of other monsters and humans, Kantarou goes round exorcising ghosts, and Hakura eventually “awakens” and remains memory about the times when he was sealed.

Yeah. It’s a nice show. Nice enough to keep awake till 3am this morning and only went to bed because I wanted to leave some episodes for today. Think you’d want to watch it? Access it from my YouTube playlist. (Psst- please do not mind the other shounen-ai playlists).
